HOW THE ROOM IS BUILT

Every application is read by a person

We would rather send an apology than fill a seat.

We do not sell seats. Rather than selling as many

tickets as possible, we build a room where people

are likely to enjoy each other's company.

That takes longer, and it is the whole point.

We read

Every application, by hand. Who you are, what you are curious about, how you tend to be at things like this. Nothing is filtered, nothing is scored, and there is no profile to fill in.

We balance the room

Fifty-fifty, always. Beyond that we watch the mix — ages, work, how many people already know each other. Seventy to eighty in total: enough that the evening has a current, few enough that you are not shouting.

We close it

When the room is full, applications close. We do not add chairs, and we do not open a second date to catch the overflow. The next one opens with a new number.

DISCRETION

Your face is yours

Evenings are photographed. We never publish a guest’s face without asking first. If you would rather not

appear at all, say so when you arrive.

We do not photograph you. Our own images never show an identifiable face, and nothing from an evening is published by us.

Primitive Thing began with a belief that meeting someone special should feel light. We are a small team of hosts, matchmakers, producers and hospitality people. We design every evening ourselves, from the guest list to the last hour, for people to connect in real life.
